Because sometimes it takes a movie to see reality more clearly
I was staring at an email from an old colleague: “I am now a consultant with a global consulting firm focused on implementing system-level changes across energy, nature and food, materials, urban areas, and finance.”
I had to smile. System-level changes. We throw that phrase around a lot in my field. But what does it really mean? I was mulling this over in yet another meeting about “systemic transformation” when something clicked. Not about consulting frameworks or theory of change models, but about The Matrix. Not the surface-level “we’re living in a simulation” part, but something deeper.
Remember that scene where Neo first “wakes up”? He thinks that’s the whole story – escape the fake world, find the real one. But it turns out that’s just the beginning. The real journey is learning to work with both realities at once.
That’s when it clicked for me. In my years of working on social change, we keep trying to find the “real” problem to solve. Is it poverty? Education? Healthcare? Systems? Individual choices? But what if, like Neo, we’re asking the wrong question?
A Different Way of Seeing
Here’s what I’ve come to understand: Reality works on multiple levels at once. The Matrix shows this beautifully – there’s the physical world of Zion, the constructed reality of the Matrix, and the deeper realm where consciousness and technology merge. Each is real in its own way. Each matters.
Last year, I was working with a community group tackling food insecurity. We started with the obvious – getting food to people who need it. That’s the Zion level – immediate, physical, crucial. But then we had to deal with the “Matrix” level – the policies, systems, and structures that create food deserts in the first place. And beneath that was something even deeper – the beliefs and assumptions we all hold about food, community, and responsibility.
Beyond Either/Or
“What I’m seeing now isn’t the Matrix – it’s the way into it,” Neo says at one point. That line keeps coming back to me. Because every time I think I’ve figured out “the real problem,” I realise it’s just one layer of something bigger.
Take the project I’m working on now. We started out thinking we had to choose between supporting individual families and changing policy. But that’s like choosing between Zion and the Matrix – it misses the point entirely. The magic happens when we work across all these levels at once.
What Actually Works
The other day, someone asked me what I’ve learned about creating real change. I told them to imagine they’re Neo learning to fly. At first, he has to consciously break all the rules he thinks are real. But eventually, he sees the truth – there were never any rules to break. Just different levels of reality to work with.
That’s what effective change work feels like now. Sometimes I’m dealing with immediate needs – that’s essential, like the resistance fighting to protect Zion. Sometimes I’m working to change systems – like hacking the Matrix. And sometimes I’m pushing for deeper transformation – like Neo negotiating with the machines.
The Stages of Waking Up
My journey in this work reminds me of Neo’s evolution throughout the trilogy. At first, things happened to me – like Neo before he took the red pill, I was just reacting to a system I didn’t fully understand. I built programs, designed projects, tried to measure outcomes. Everything looked good on paper, but something was always missing.
Then I started trying to make change happen by me. Like Neo first learning to fight, I thought if I just got better at the work – better funding models, better platforms, better metrics – I could solve these problems through sheer force of will. I created pooled funds, built collaborative networks, designed platforms for scale. But it was like Neo trying to bend the spoon – as long as I thought I was the one doing it, it didn’t quite work.
The real shift came when I started understanding change happens with me. That’s when I moved toward trust-based funding and longer-term commitments. It was like that moment when Neo stops trying to be “The One” and starts working with both humans and machines. The solution wasn’t in doing more or trying harder – it was in creating the conditions for change to emerge naturally.
Now I’m learning to let change flow through me. Like Neo in the final battle, when he finally stops fighting and allows himself to become a channel for transformation. That’s what real systems change feels like – not pushing or controlling, but holding space for something new to emerge.
Seeing With New Eyes
The deeper I get into this work, the more I understand what Morpheus meant when he said “I can only show you the door. You have to walk through it.” Every stage of this journey felt necessary. I had to build programs to see their limits. I had to create platforms to understand their gaps. I had to learn to trust before I could truly let go.
Now when I look at a challenge, I ask different questions. Not “how do we fix this?” but “what wants to emerge?” Not “how do we control for outcomes?” but “how do we create the right conditions?” It’s like that moment when Neo finally sees the Matrix for what it is – not code to be manipulated, but a living system to be understood.
The Real Lesson
You know what’s wild? The Matrix isn’t really about escaping the system – it’s about learning to work skillfully with all levels of reality at once. That’s what I’m trying to do now in my work. When we start a new project, I ask:
- What’s the immediate need we need to address?
- What systems and structures are we working with?
- What deeper beliefs and patterns are at play?
- How can we work with all of these at once?
I still rewatch The Matrix – these days, especially the Director’s Cut with its commentary track. Hearing Cornel West and Ken Wilber narrate the film’s deeper meanings changed everything for me. They don’t get caught up in the special effects or the fight scenes. Instead, they reveal how the movie works on multiple levels at once: philosophical, spiritual, political, personal. That’s what real change is like. Not about finding some perfect solution, but about seeing how all these layers of reality dance together. And learning to dance with them.
Like Neo, we’re all learning to work with multiple realities at once. Some days it feels impossible. But then I remember – that’s exactly how it felt for him too, until suddenly it didn’t. And that’s usually right when something remarkable starts to happen.
Sometimes people ask me if I miss seeing things the simpler way – when I thought change was just about finding the right program or policy to fix things. It reminds me of that moment when Morpheus offers Neo the choice between the blue pill and the red pill. The blue pill would have been easier – go back to seeing things in black and white, pretending complex problems have simple solutions.
But here’s the thing about taking the red pill: Once you start seeing the layers of reality – how everything connects, how change really works – you can’t go back. And truthfully? I wouldn’t want to. Because even though it’s harder, even though it means holding complexity and sometimes feeling overwhelmed, it also means we can create change that actually sticks. Real change. The kind that ripples through all the layers of reality at once.
And that’s worth swallowing the red pill for.
